It’s a big year for Scripps. The healthcare institution is celebrating its 100th birthday, and in its century in SD, it’s racked up its fair share of accolades: US News and World Report has named Scripps in the top 50 hospitals for cardiology and orthopedics for 19 and 11 years running, respectively.

And it’s not letting age slow it down.

At Scripps Clinic’s Shiley Center for Orthopaedic Research and Education (SCORE), scientists are currently in the discovery phase of developing tissue from human stem cells to use in rotator cuff treatment. The eventual goal is to create a biologically engineered tendon to replace or repair the patient’s torn rotator cuff.

“This is a common injury, and as our population ages, there’s a pressing need to find new solutions,” says lead researcher Darryl D’Lima, MD, PhD, and director of orthopedic research for SCORE at Scripps Clinic.

This year also marked 40 years of the Mohs Micrographic Surgery and Dermatologic Oncology Fellowship, led for all four decades by Dr. Hubert Greenway. Dr. Greenway teaches doctors a technique pioneered by his mentor, Dr. Frederic Mohs, who developed a method of removing skin cancer layer by layer, checking for cancer cells along the way and preserving healthy tissue in the process. Dr. Greenway has performed 45,000 Mohs surgeries and trained 68 physicians to disseminate the technique as skin cancer cases increase each year.

Aside from treating formidable health issues, Scripps Health faces a growing, industry-wide challenge: violence against healthcare workers. Workplace violence at all five Scripps hospital campuses jumped by 31 percent in 2023, reaching 2,335 total incidents. Healthcare staff experience demeaning comments, verbal abuse, and assaults on a regular basis.

Scripps Health President & CEO Chris Van Gorder is part of a countywide task force addressing the problem, and the organization recently hired a retired FBI special agent to enhance staff security and safety training.

Next up for Scripps Health? A new, 227,000-square-foot, three-story building that will expand acute care services and increase the number of hospital beds. Lusardi Tower at Scripps Encinitas is scheduled to open in 2025, housing private inpatient rooms, operating facilities, intensive and progressive care units, and a pulmonary institute.

Ever heard of the “Christmas holiday effect”? Your cardiologist has. The term refers to the annual uptick in cardiovascular deaths in late December and early January. The reasons for the increase are many. Issues with stress, poorly controlled blood pressure, and delays in seeing the doctor or going to the hospital can exacerbate heart conditions and overindulging can play a role for those with a history of heart failure or cardiomyopathy. Even deviating from your normal routine may be significant enough to impact heart health. Click here for a Scripps cardiologist’s recommendations for keeping your heart healthy.

Sean

In May 2021, 22-year-old Sean O’Callaghan made a life-changing discovery that took him on an unexpected health journey. One side of his testicles looked bigger than the other, then he started to experience numbness and pain. Sean went to his primary care physician and heard the news no one wants to hear—it was likely testicular cancer. He sought treatment at Scripps MD Anderson Cancer Center and his care team coordinated a disease-specific care plan that included surgery and chemotherapy. He kept a positive outlook throughout treatment and is now cancer-free. Read more of his story here.

When in doubt, get it checked out—that’s the message for men with any testicular concerns. Testicular cancer is most common in men ages 15 to 44. As with many cancers, the key to successful treatment is early detection. Click here for common symptoms of testicular cancer.

The 53rd Scripps Invitational Golf Tournament on September 30 raised more than $600,000 for research and innovation at Scripps Clinic. Golfers enjoyed an afternoon on the Torrey Pines South Golf Course, which was followed by an outdoor awards reception at The Lodge at Torrey Pines. Also, long-time volunteer and supporter, Jean Snow-Anderson, received the Ellen Browning Scripps Humanitarian Award for her contributions to Scripps Health.

That said, this holiday season, it’s better to give and receive. You may not be getting all the tax advantages of your charitable donations and the clock may be running out to cash in on philanthropy’s financial benefits. Outpatient Orthopedic Surgery

Outpatient Orthopedic Surgery

Orthopedics is changing for the better, and Scripps is at the forefront. Delivering quality care is at the heart of Scripps’ mission, and its orthopedics program is a pillar of that excellence. Advanced technology and expanded capabilities in the orthopedics field are making invasive procedures and extended hospital stays things of the past for many patients. Their surgical needs can often be better met through outpatient procedures that allow them to receive the same world-class care, but recover in the comfort of their own homes. Scripps’ orthopedic surgeons see patients with a wide range of conditions, many of which can now be treated on an outpatient basis. This includes both common and complex procedures, such as hip and knee replacements; spine surgery; hand, wrist and elbow surgery; and treatment for sports-related injuries. Read more about the benefits of outpatient surgery and Scripps’ ambulatory surgery centers here.

Do You Have A Vitamin D Deficiency? https://staging.sandiegomagazine.com/partner-content/do-you-have-a-vitamin-d-deficiency/ Sat, 02 Jul 2022 02:31:00 +0000 http://staging.sdmag-courtavenuelatam.com/uncategorized/do-you-have-a-vitamin-d-deficiency/ Even in San Diego, many people come up short on the sunshine vitamin

The post Do You Have A Vitamin D Deficiency? appeared first on San Diego Magazine.

Vitamin D is essential to good health. It helps keep our bones strong, prevent chronic conditions, and may play a role in immune function. Vitamin D earned its nickname “the sunshine vitamin” because it’s produced naturally by our bodies when we’re exposed to ultraviolet light. It can also be obtained via foods, including egg yolks, fatty fish, and fortified cereal and dairy products; or from supplements. Yet, despite its importance, it’s estimated that more than 40 percent of Americans don’t get enough. Think you may be one of them? Learn what signs to look out for here.

While sunshine may up our vitamin D production, it also contributes to the development of dark spots on the skin. These spots—technical name “lentigines”—resemble freckles and are more common in people with lighter skin. The best way to prevent them is avoiding sunlight, but that’s virtually impossible. There is some hope though. Find out about lasers and other treatments that can banish spots here.

With a violin and a bow in her hands, Lisa Sutton can create magic. The 65-year-old Vancouver-born and Ivy League–educated violinist spent decades honing her craft and now exercises it both for live audiences, as assistant concertmaster and member of the Los Angeles Opera’s orchestra, and for movie and television soundtrack recordings. Sutton had a long and illustrious run in the LA music scene, but aching joints in her hands began affecting her performances when she was in her late 50s. She was diagnosed with osteoarthritis, which for her is marked by the degeneration of cartilage in the joints at the middle and tips of some of her fingers. She tried anti-inflammatories and platelet-rich plasma injections, but the effects were temporary. She started searching for a surgical solution and found Scripps. Read about Lisa, the highly specialized joint replacement that allowed her to keep playing, and the talented surgeon who performed the procedure here.

Alzheimer’s Scripps Health

An estimated 6.2 million Americans over age 65 are living with Alzheimer’s disease, and unfortunately, according to the Alzheimer’s Association, that number could more than double by 2050 if there aren’t any breakthrough treatments. Although forgetfulness is the most noticeable symptom, Alzheimer’s disease can also cause impaired attention, poor judgment, spatial disorientation, personality changes, and more. Scripps offers specialized care and extensive support to Alzheimer’s patients, including cognitive screens, detailed memory testing, standard imaging tests and advanced radiology studies. Scripps also works with Alzheimer’s San Diego to offer guidance and support to patients and their families.
