We told you a couple weeks ago that Stone Brewing‘s exec chef Alex Carballo was leaving to front a new project. Now we know the details. He’s teaming with Jon Mangini—owner of URBN, BASIC and Gang Kitchen—to take over the El Cajon Brewing Co. (110 N. Magnolia). They’re planning to open another URBN location, only this time they’ll be brewing their own. The first batches will serve the other restaurants in the group, with expansion plans after that. That said, Monday night is a great night for pie, and Basic Urban Kitchen + Bar and URBN is currently my favorite pizza in the city. From 5-7PM tonight, they’re doing a really, really awesome thing: donating all proceeds—PROCEEDS, not just profits—to the Sandy Hook School Support System. If you want dinner with a little heart, go order a couple New Haven-style pies (thin, crispy-chewy crust spin on Neapolitano). That’s how you care about National Anything Weeks.
