Maize will be the main character of the Museum of Contemporary Art’s culinary shindig for September. Executive Chef of The Kitchen, Tim Kolanko, has a five-course menu planned for Chef’s Dinner: The Study of Corn, with each dish demonstrating the varying flavors of the grain. This prix fixe meal will be served with a side of oceanfront views (and wine pairings if you’d like) in the Sahm Seaview Room, with seating from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Dinner reservations are $95 per person plus tax and gratuity and can be made on OpenTable.

Taste of Old Town + Tequila Tour 2024

September 12

Old Town San Diego, packed with several historical and cultural monuments within a handful of blocks, is also home to some of the city’s best eats. On the annual Taste of Old Town + Tequila Tour from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. this Thursday, there will be traditional Mexican fare and drinks like margaritas, mezcals and spirits. Tickets are $44 for Taste of Old Town ($60 with the tequila tour add-on) and $17 for children.

Taste of Gaslamp

Roam downtown for food and drink specials at the 28th annual Taste of Gaslamp, with more than 20 local businesses taking part, including loads of food on 5th Avenue. The main event will take place from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., but attendees are also invited to stop by Happy Does’ pre-party and the after-party at Swing Social. Tickets are available online for general admission ($45) and VIPs ($70), who will receive five extra bites and sips, with each ticket cost being upped $10 the day of the event.

On September 13, Glass Animals will hit the stage at North Island Credit Union with their intriguing, pop-tinged sound. North County shopping center The Forum Carlsbad will host an afternoon of art, wines and wellness at their Fall Art & Wine Walk this Saturday from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. Following a free flow yoga class from YogaSix at 2 p.m., those who stop by the mall can view several pieces of artwork and stop by Jimbo’s wine garden for complimentary charcuterie, international wine samples and live music from Shea Givens. This Saturday, San Diego and Tijuana’s creative voices will be out in full force during ENVZN24 Urban Art Takeover, an all-in-one artistic showcase. Local plein air painter Lester Machado’s new exhibition, In Pursuit of Light, will premiere this Saturday at Union Hall Gallery with a free opening reception from 5 to 8 p.m. Fifty new paintings from the San Diego artist, as well as several works that were influential to Machado, will be on display to the public on Fridays from 2 to 6 p.m. and Saturdays and Sundays from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. through August 18.

Athenaeum Summer Festival

Begins July 7

Pianist Gustavo Romero will explore Frédéric Chopin’s artistry over the course of four Sunday afternoons in July as part of the Athenaeum Summer Festival. The first festival performance will begin at 7 p.m. on Friday night in the Joan & Irwin Jacobs Music Room. Tickets to individual shows are $50 for members and $55 for nonmembers; for $200, guests at the performances on the 7th and 28th can enjoy priority seating and dinner following the concerts and get the chance to meet Romero.

The Color Purple

New Village Arts’ stage adaptation of Alice Walker’s The Color Purple follows protagonist Celie’s four-decade-long journey toward a better life. Directed by Kandace Crystal and starring Carlsbad native Nio Russell, this production marries jazz, gospel, ragtime, and other genres in a soundtrack that chronicles the vast evolution and history of Black American music. Tickets are $33 for previews (Thursday and Friday). They increase to $55 or more beginning with opening night this Saturday.

Mainly Mozart All-Star Orchestra Festival

Representatives from several of the country’s leading orchestras are teaming up for six shows to celebrate Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and other pillars of classical music at the annual Mainly Mozart Orchestra Festival. The festival begins with Mozart Piano Concerto 21 & Beethoven 6 this Thursday, followed by Mozart Symphony 31 on Saturday at the UCSD Amphitheatre and Gran Partita Matinee on Sunday afternoon at The Conrad. Nine The Musical

Summer Fun on the 101

June 22

Spend your Saturday jamming to live music at Leucadia Roadside Park. Summer Fun on the 101 takes place from 11:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. just up the hill from Surf Point in Encinitas. This free musical education fundraiser features a beer garden and an all-day music lineup that includes Albert Hurtado, Sure Fire Soul Ensemble, and TRUEBLOOD, winners of the Leucadia 101 Mainstreet Battle of the Bands. Proceeds from the event will help fund a musical studies scholarship for two high school grads (and budding musicians) from San Dieguito Academy.

The Old Globe is starting its summer season off with a bash worthy of the Bard himself. The Solstice Soirée fundraiser, taking place from 6 to 11 p.m. at JULEP Venue this Friday, will feature crafted concoctions from Snake Oil Cocktails, live music, and interactive theater fun. The highlight? Several of the city’s best chefs are coming together to create distinctive dishes that pay homage to the theater’s upcoming programming. As part of World Design Capital 2024, WDC 2024 Club has launched a Binational Youth Poster Exhibition, selecting 16 young artists from the San Diego-Tijuana region to take part in a collaborative project. Each artist designed a unique poster expressing ideas for how the area can grow and thrive. The showcase opens with a reception this Thursday from 6 to 9 p.m. at UC San Diego Park & Market and remains on display through August 30 at the East Village venue and at Casa de la Cultura in Tijuana. The summertime concert series at Town Center Community Park East returns with new weekly shows and local food truck lineups every Thursday (except July 4th) through August 15. San Diego band Cassie B will perform a medley of Top 40 hits at the season’s first concert this Thursday from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Featured food vendors include Born in Brooklyn, Delish Dogs, Gelu California, Sapos Tacos, and Sweet Treats. Rescues A Way Home for Dogs and Rugers Rescues will bring along pups for you to meet and adopt. Bro-Am 2024 Benefit Party & Beach Fest

San Diego alt-rock band Switchfoot’s marquee fundraising event celebrates two decades of community philanthropy with a swanky benefit party and a free waterfront festival. From 6 to 10 p.m. this Thursday, the Bro-Am benefit party will bring silent and live auctions, food and beverage samples, and a Switchfoot concert to a private event space in North County. Tickets for reserved seats are $375 and general admission is $275. On Saturday at Moonlight Beach, the Bro-Am Beach Fest will run 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. with several surfing events—including the iconic surf jousting—plus live music from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m., with Switchfoot headlining. ⁠Proceeds from the 2024 Bro-Am benefit several San Diego-based nonprofits, including A Step Beyond, Feeding San Diego, and Save The Music Foundation.

2024 USA Surfing Championships

Cheer on the champions of the ocean one wave at a time. Now through Saturday, San Diegans can settle on the sand near Oceanside Pier and spectate this year’s USA Surfing Championships. Dozens of the best youth and adult surfers in the country will compete to win hardware and represent their nation in International Surfing Association World Championships events.

San Diegans will converge on the Del Mar Fairgrounds for four weeks of fun at the San Diego County Fair. At the Fair-Tastic Food Competition (June 14), San Diego Mag’s own Troy Johnson will serve as a judge, selecting the best (and most indulgent) fair bites. Kids 5 years old and younger receive free admission daily, while kids ages 6 to 12 get in gratis on Fridays. General admission tickets for adults (ages 13–61) are $16 on Wednesdays and Thursdays and $20 Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays. Hosted and created by comedian Allison Goldberg, Love Isn’t Blind is a dating show that puts men firmly in the hot seat. San Diego FC has inked its first designated player: Hirving “Chucky” Lozano. To celebrate the occasion, SDFC is hosting a community fan fest at the Rady Shell this Thursday with live music, an appearance from the city’s newest soccer star, and much more. Written by Mario Vega with music and lyrics from Eliza Vedar, Pásale Pásalea poignant love letter to South Bay—continues its month-long run at Bayfront Charter School. TuYo Theatre’s new musical (which premiered at the La Jolla Playhouse’s Without Walls Festival earlier this year) tells the story of a community coming together when vendor fees are raised at the local swap meet. The show’s group of eight local artists includes photographers, psychologists, and woodworkers. Teen Arts Collective Showcase at MCASD

Interconnections: The Relationships that Form Us will showcase the work of 20 high school juniors and seniors from San Diego County for one weekend only at the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego. Museum visitors can hear from the young artists and enjoy refreshments and a local DJ set during the museum’s Teen Night event this Friday at 4:30 p.m. The free exhibition will be on display in the Axline Court gallery from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday and from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday.

At MiraCosta College from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. this Saturday, the 74th annual Latino Book & Family Festival brings together more than 120 educational, health, and author-led booths; a food village; bilingual workshops; and more. Keynote speakers at this free event include La Bamba writer and director Luis Valdez; Dr. Beatriz Villareal, director of the Mano a Mano Foundation; and author and O’side lifer Victor Villaseñor. The night before the fest, catch a screening of La Bamba at the Little Theatre on campus at 7:30 p.m. Seating is first-come, first-served.

St. Spyridon Greek Orthodox Church hosts the San Diego Greek Festival this Saturday from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Spend the weekend watching folk music and dance performances and sampling Greek bites, beers, wines, and spirits—but be sure to go easy on the ouzo. General admission is $4, and children under the age of 12 get in for free. A complimentary park-and-ride shuttle will take off from the San Diego Unified School District lot (4301 Campus Avenue) every ten minutes throughout the festival.

June kicks off this weekend with plenty of summer festivities, live music performances, and hopefully a glimmer of sunshine. This weekend a classic local brewery turns nine, a two-day music festival kicks off in North Park, and San Diego’s largest running event each year takes place. Duck Foot Brewing 9th Anniversary Party

June 1

Ales and anniversaries will go hand-in-hand this Saturday at Duck Foot Brewing. The local brewery will be celebrating its ninth birthday at its Miramar tasting room with dozens of beers on tap, a live DJ and arcade games from 12 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. The party will also feature free craft-brewed sodas, shaded outdoor seating, picnic tables, an outdoor game zone, two food trucks and finish off with a comedy performance from 8 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Attendees can purchase either the five ($29) or 10 taster ($49) drinkpass, each of which comes with a commemorative tasting glass.

Bluefin Tuna Tasting Menu at Herb & Sea

San Diegans are invited to taste the fresh local catch from Tuna Dockside Market as bluefin tuna swims back on the Herb & Sea menu. With new offerings every Sunday throughout the summer, Herb & Sea executive chef Aidan Owens will craft a three-course meal with an appetizer, entree and dessert, but the star of the show will be the fatty and flavorful bluefin tuna. Every week, the dishes will change so this Sunday’s dinner guests will get first dibs on the sea’s seasonal bounty. Reservations are available between 5 p.m. and 9 .m. this Sunday and cost $55 per person.

North Park Music Fest 2024

May 31 & June 1

With the theme of “Music Beyond Borders,” North Park Music Fest welcomes worldly musicians and plenty of local talent, including Tijuana’s Parque de Cometas and several of San Diego’s own, including Big Yen, TRANSFER and Mokoto. Attendees can enjoy two days worth of live performances, plus beer, craft cocktails and over 15 local food vendors, craft cocktails, beers from local breweries from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Friday and Saturday from 12 p.m. to 10 p.m. at North Park Mini Park.

Ticket options include 2-day general admission ($60) and single-day general admission ($45) and can be purchased here; kids ages 18 and under receive free admission but must be accompanied by an adult. For the full festival experience, there is also a VIP add-on ($25 for single-day, $40 for two-day) for festival goers to check out a DJ, art exhibit, rooftop beer garden and more at Granado House Gallery.

Camelot at North Coast Repertory Theatre

Originating from the folktales of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table, Camelot at the North Coast Repertory promises a medieval time at the theater. Adapted from the iconic Broadway musical and featuring new orchestrations by Steve Orich, audiences can dive into this mythical and musical tale of royalty, chivalry and betrayals of the heart. There will be preview performances on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday followed by a pair of shows on Sunday; though opening night on Saturday is sold out, anyone interested in attending can call the box office to be placed on the waitlist. Tickets for this week’s performances start at $52.

The Little Mermaid Ballet at the Joan B. Kroc Theatre

See traditional ballet sequences set to a fantasy under the sea at Joan B. Kroc Theatre this weekend. Students from BalletCenter Studios, trained under the tutelage of teachers Michelle Noblejas Bartolomei and Trystan Merrick, will perform as the music and choreography of the influential ballet Le Corsaire is incorporated into this onstage re-imagining of the iconic Disney film. There will be a performance Friday night followed by two shows on Saturday; tickets for each performance range from $30 to $60.

Festivals & Art Exhibits in San Diego This Weekend

Valley Center Western Days Parade and Festival

May 31 & June 1

At Valley Center’s historical, western-inspired celebration, the whole community is a part of the fun. The free two-day festival commences Friday from 4:30 p.m. to 10 p.m., with live music, a food and beer garden and local first responders duking it out at the Guns & Hose Chili Cook-off ($5 entry donation. More is in store Saturday with the FFA Pancake Breakfast, a 5K and kids’ fun run and a parade from 10 a.m. to noon. The festival continues from 11 a.m. to 10:30 p.m., with more live music, line dancing lessons, a car show, farmers market and an old-fashioned pie eating contest.

Pride by the Beach Oceanside

June 1

The 17th annual Pride by the Beach will be a day full of education, entertainment and community-wide fun, officially kicking off Pride Month with a free family-friendly event. The festival will include more than 130 food and retail vendors, two stages of live entertainment, and a music lineup headlined by Oceanside native DJ Inspired from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. at Oceanside Civic Center Plaza. The festival will continue over at the Coco Cabana with a 21+ after party going until 10 p.m.; early bird tickets are still on sale for $10.

Sam Hinton Folk Heritage Festival at Old Poway Park

June 1

Championing the sounds of bluegrass and all things folk, the Sam Hinton Folk Heritage Festival continues to carry on the traditions of acoustic musical storytelling. The free festival carries the namesake of marine biologist, UCSD Professor and folk singer extraordinaire Sam Hinton, who passed away in 2009 but remains a pioneer of the city’s folk scene. Beginning at 10 a.m. this Saturday at Old Poway Park, attendees can check out a bevy of folk and folk-adjacent performances—headlined by the bayou bumpin’ Billy Lee and the Swamp Critters—and also peruse the Poway Farmers Market onsite from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Cuéntame Exhibit at The Front Arte & Cultura

June 1-7 

Cuéntame the newest exhibition at The Front Arte & Cultura is an artistic testament to the power of community preservation. Curated by Yvette Roman and Natalia Ventura, Cuéntame is an oral history conducted by nine rising artists living in San Diego and Tijuana, showcasing art, audio and documentation on display for a week-long exhibition. Through these archival methods, the stories, insights and sageness of the elder community residing at nearby Villa Merced Apartments have been captured and preserved to carry on into the next generation. An opening reception for Cuéntame will be held at the gallery from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. this Saturday.

San Diego French Film Festival Opening Party at The Lot

June 2-5

The fourth annual San Diego French Film Festival—four days of food, films and festivities that honor French cinematic heritage—from Alliance Française San Diego begins this Sunday at The Lot with an opening party. After guests make their entrance on the red carpet, they’ll be treated with a screening of the short film Au Revoir Belmondo followed by the César Award–winning feature The Three Musketeers: Milady. The night at the movies will close out with a classy party featuring Champagne, hors d’oeuvres, music from DJ GRGTRAXX and desserts from San Diego-based French pastry chef Clément Le Déoré. Tickets for the full opening night experience are $195 for non-members and $155 for members; for admission to the Sunday screenings only, tickets are $35.

A collection of local crafters, makers, artists and artisans come together one Saturday a month at the Normal Heights Masonic Lodge as part of the San Diego Vintage Flea Market. From 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. this Saturday, the monthly market returns with new finds and locally sourced items from a variety of vendors. Whether you’re looking for a stylish leather jacket for a night out or the perfect rug to liven up your living room, the vintage flea market is packed to the brim with essentials that won’t break the bank. Entry to the market is $1 and a portion of the proceeds will go towards a local nonprofit.

Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon San Diego

June 1-2

Though runners are invited to take part in a traditional Saturday morning 5K, the racers who strive to complete the half marathon or marathon at Rock ‘n’ Roll San Diego will receive an extra helping of motivation. In addition to getting an on-foot tour of America’s Finest City beginning from Balboa Park, runners will get to enjoy music and entertainment along the course from DJs, live bands and even a Tom Cruise impersonator. Following the races on Sunday, there will be live music from No Doubt tribute band No Duh and Saved by the 90’s plus post-race entertainment beginning at 9 a.m. at Waterfront Park.

“The Endless Mile” West Coast Premiere at Digital Gym Cinema

June 1-2

Marathon Media is throwing a special west coast premiere at Digital Gym Cinema for the short documentary film The Endless Mile, which tells the powerful story of 85-year-old ultra-marathon athlete Jimmie Barnes and his walk towards a world record. The Endless Mile captures the perspective of Barnes, his family and his herculean pursuit of walking 114 miles in 48 hours, with a resilient story sure to leave audiences feeling a runner’s high. Screenings will be held at 5 p.m. and 6 p.m., each which will be followed by a 15-minute Q&A session with the all-women cast and crew, all of whom are based in San Diego. Tickets for each screening are $15 per person and guests are advised to arrive 15 minutes before their screenings.
