Trail of the Month: Tecolote Canyon Trail

Tecolote Canyon Trail map

Where: The trail starts at the Tecolote Nature Center at 5180 Tecolote Road off Morena Boulevard. Follow the trail and go left when you reach a junction by the golf course. Keep bearing left to hug the golf course and then follow the trail as it curves right. Stay to the right as you reach a crossing trail at 2.3 miles and continue until you reach Genesee Avenue. There, you can turn around and go back the way you came.

Why we love it: This perfect trail takes you through one of San Diego’s many in-city canyons. With only a few short (but steep) hills, it’s also a good beginner’s introduction to trail running, or serves as a go-to for experienced trail runners who don’t want to drive outside the city. Take in views of high mesas and natural brush.

Where to refuel afterwards: Get classic diner fare at Perry’s Café (4610 Pacific Highway).

Great for: Running

Difficulty Level: Moderate

Distance: 6 miles out and back

Location: Linda Vista
