Chargers free safety Eric Weddle recently recalled when Quentin Jammer and Steve Gregory were his teammates here in San Diego. He described how the three of them would play golf together every Tuesday. (Imagine being matched up in that threesome!) Their goal was to play a different course each week.

I asked Weddle which was his favorite, and he didn’t hesitate with his answer: “Arrowood Golf Course.” Arrow…WHAT?

If you haven’t heard of Arrowood, you’re not alone. It quietly opened in 2005, but when Jim Stull became general manager in 2012, things started to change in terms of exposure and excitement. Each day of the week they offer a free Hole-In-One opportunity with a $2,000 cash prize, closest-to-the-pin contests, and a general “tournament feel” with every round because, with all the contests and prizes, there’s always a chance to play for something.

But Weddle, an Encinitas resident, loves it for his own reasons. “The golf course is challenging, yet fair,” he explains. “If you hit a bad shot there are no lucky breaks, and if you hit a good shot you are rewarded. You are forced to focus strictly on what you are doing, not on what your playing partners are doing.” He also described how the course requires players to constantly look ahead to the next shot, especially when their last shot was a bad one—just like in football, where you must leave the last play behind and move on to the next in order to be successful. Sounds like a good strategy in life, too. Arrowood Golf Course, 5201 Village Drive, Oceanside
