Intimate Apparel

Written by Pulitzer Prize–winning playwright Lynn Nottage, Intimate Apparel follows a Black seamstress in 1905 Manhattan who desires a romantic escape from her lonely life. This touching story is brought to life on stage with an abundance of stylish and sophisticated period costumes and a heartfelt cast of characters. There will be six performances of Intimate Apparel this Thursday through Sunday at the North Coast Repertory Theatre, with a talkback planned following the conclusion of Friday night’s performance. Disney On Ice: Frozen and Encanto

This weekend, Disney on Ice returns to Pechanga Arena with two of their most popular animated fairy tales in tow: Frozen and Encanto. In an enchanting ice-capade-esque performance hosted by Mickey and Minnie, audiences will be transported to the icy kingdom of Arendelle and the mountainous town of Encanto, where they’ll be enchanted by tales of love, family and acceptance. There will be eight shows through Sunday, with appearances from Elsa, Anna, Mirabel and plenty of other Disney character favorites.

Chef’s Dinner: The Study of Roots

The Museum of Contemporary Art’s monthly culinary series returns for 2024, and this Thursday, executive chef of The Kitchen, Tim Kolanko, will cook up a four-course feast for guests. Highlights on the menu include sea trout crudo, Alaskan halibut and beef short rib confit. Be sure to save room for carrot cake with cream cheese frosting, cara cara orange, and pecan praline following the main courses. Seatings are available inside the Sahm Seaview Room or outdoors at Art Park from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. Dinner is priced at $110 plus tax and gratuity per person and reservations (which require a $50 deposit) can be made here.

The Cab Calloway Orchestra

Continuing the musical legacy of renowned bandleader Cab Calloway, The Cab Calloway Orchestra transports audiences to Harlem’s historic Cotton Club, a venue where artists like Calloway, Duke Ellington and Louis Armstrong honed their craft. Led by Cab Calloway’s grandson Calloway Brooks, the orchestra’s concerts are a celebration of swing with a big band, scat singing, zoot suits and a performance of “Minnie the Moocher.” Tickets range from $35 to 75 ($20 for students with ID), and can be purchased here

2024 Intersections Concert Series – Adam Bilorou Trio

The first entry in UC San Diego Park & Market’s 2024 Intersections Concert Series is a concert from the Adam Bilorou Trio, whose music is an imaginative mix of traditional West African percussion with rhythms inspired by Bilorou’s international travels. Intersections offers monthly takes on various educational and artistic disciplines, and following Friday night’s performance in the Guggenheim Theatre, there will be a Q&A with Bilorou conducted by series co-curator Kamau Kenyatta. General admission ($25) and VIP ($35) tickets are available for this concert, which begins at 7 p.m.

‘NORTH: The Musical’

The production of NORTH: The Musical, a tale of of exceptional bravery that combines suspenseful storytelling and breathtaking ballads, continues its national tour with a show at the Poway Center for the Performing Arts this Saturday at 6 p.m. Based on real-life accounts of slaves who sacrificed their lives to traverse the Underground Railroad in search of freedom, audiences will follow Lawrence and his mother Minnie as they concoct a plan to escape the Deep South in this emotionally resonant and optimistically resilient story. Tickets for Saturday evenings’ performance are available from $20 to $40.

Doggie Street Festival

This free pup-themed festival is calling all local dog lovers to bring their favorite furry friends along to NTC Park this Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Besides being a celebration of doggos big, small and everything-in-between, the festival also serves as an adoption event for anyone who’s interested in bringing a cute canine home. There will be live music, food vendors, contests, various pet products on sale, a doggy-item auction, plus a VIP lounge.

Thinner Reunion Screening

Organized by the folks at Visit Oceanside and the Oceanside International Film Festival, the Star Theatre will host this special screening, meet and greet and panel discussion for the 1996 horror film Thinner based on Stephen’s King’s spine-chilling novel. In attendance from the film’s cast and crew will be director Tom Holland, actors Robert John Burke, Kari Wuhrer and Joe Mantegna, and makeup artist Vincent J. Guastini who will discuss their careers, as well as the film and its cult-classic legacy. Doors open for the event at 4 p.m. and admission is $30 ($20 for senior/students/military).

Korea in Color: On the Steps at SDMA

This Saturday, the San Diego Museum of Art is hosting a free cultural celebration on the steps of the museum for its Korea in Color: A Legacy of Auspicious Images exhibition (on display through March 3) from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. This event will feature several K-pop performances, artist booths and craft-making stations highlighting local Korean artists, as well as free admission to the museum during the event. The “Korea in Color” exhibition showcases 50 pieces of artwork, including paintings, sculpture and multimedia, that exhibit polychrome painting and its connection to Korean society, with both centuries-old artwork and contemporary pieces on display.

Peter Cochrane: “The Magician Longs to See” 

On display in the Joseph Clayes III and Rotunda Galleries at the Athenaeum Music & Arts Library beginning this Saturday through April 13, Peter Cochrane’s The Magician Longs to See uses digital imaging and darkroom prints to portray the journey of preservation. The San Diego artist was strongly influenced by horticulture, specifically California’s native plants and Athenaeum’s botanical archives, to question metamorphosis and alchemy in the human quest to preserve the natural world around them. A free opening reception will be held for The Magician Longs to See this Friday from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., and there will be a free gallery walk-through this Saturday at 1 p.m.

Tony Siqi Yun

The Baker-Baum Hall at the Conrad Prebys Performing Arts Center welcomes Canadian-born pianist Tony Siqi Yin for his San Diego debut performance this Sunday at 3 p.m. Yun is a featured performer in La Jolla Music Society’s Discovery Series, which aims to highlight the world’s best classical, jazz and chamber musicians, and his classical music program will feature works from acclaimed composers such as Brahm, Beethoven, and Schumann.
